Texture is used a lot in abstract art to make a painting less flat and have much more depth and often to create subtle meanings or suggestions. With texture on a painting you can have different colors showing through the painting from underneath creating a kind of air of mystery to your abstracts.

The most common substance for adding texture and depth to a painting is gesso. You can use this to add brushstrokes and sometimes thicker texture but it is not conducive to really deep texture. You can also use paint itself to add texture, particularly left over paint if you are using acrylics.

There are other things you can create texture with that are cheaper than gesso and also give you a thicker base. See this article on alternatives to gesso for details.

One thing you can do to create fantastic and unusual texture is to add things to your base substance to give it character. Some examples of what you can add are:

Rice

Split peas

Peppercorns

Mustard seed

Sand

Glass beads

Tissue paper

String

These are just a few examples and the options are pretty much endless. As long as you coat the substance in the texture to seal it (if it is a foodstuff) then it will be fine, particularly once it is painted over. Try to choose things that are not too big to start off with and see how you get on, then you can always move on to using things like nails, screws and other larger things if you want to be experimental.

Try using the added materials just in one area of the painting or use the rule of thirds to accentuate certain areas of the painting with the texture.

The options are pretty wide as to what you can use to add to your texture base. It just needs to be a substance that won’t degrade in time. Generally if you coat it with the texture and then paint over it most things will be sealed in to the painting and so will not degrade. So, experiment, have fun, and see what you can create.

He was the anarchist of 1980s design, but the technical wizardry in his current London show feels over-polished and out of touch

Unless you die young, it’s difficult to be a hero for ever. Heroes are commercialised. They succumb to what Norman Mailer called “exhaustion of the will”. Or they simply go out of fashion. And that’s what happened to Ron Arad – or at least, that’s what we thought had happened. But the Israeli-born, London-based designer of bold, sculptural furniture has never been more ubiquitous. In the last year, a major retrospective of his work has bounced from the Centre Pompidou in Paris to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, recently landing at London’s Barbican.

Arad is one of the design world’s few nameable stars. Most people will probably know his Tom Vac chair (1993), a rippled plastic armchair on steel legs that once abounded in cool restaurants. Or perhaps his bestselling Bookworm bookshelf, a flexible ribbon that holds your books in a spiral. But these are merely the outward signs of his commercial success. He also works as an artist, selling one-off pieces for sometimes hundreds of thousands of pounds, and as an architect and teacher. Over the last decade he has been hugely influential at the Royal College of Art, where he was head of the Design Products department until last year. Arad wasn’t interested in teaching people how to be professional industrial designers: he wanted to teach them how to think for themselves, and a generation of designers graduated wanting to work just as he did – as a designer-maker, free from the technical constraints set by manufacturers.

To understand Arad the hero, visitors to the Barbican show should head straight up to the mezzanine galleries to soak up his early work from the 1980s. There they’ll find a stereo and speakers encased in concrete, which look as though they’ve been hauled off a building site or hacked from a sea wall. Can you imagine a rougher envelope for all that delicate technology? So much for the precious, garish styling of the designer decade. Arad, recently graduated from the Architectural Association, had broken out of architecture to do his own thing. His work was raw and muscular, but also rich and clever.

It all started with an old leather car seat bolted to some scaffolding pipes. The Rover chair (1981), an emblem of Britain’s fading car industry spliced with some DIY high-tech structure, was an instant punk icon, the furniture equivalent of the Sex Pistols’ ransom-note typography. Before Arad had even noticed any connection to the prevailing counter-culture, Jean-Paul Gaultier was knocking on his door to buy six. He went on to hammer metal into clunky thrones such as the Tinker chair (1988), and turn looped steel sheets into a parody of your auntie’s upholstered armchair in the Well-Tempered chair (1986). It was visceral stuff, and what’s more, it looked like he was having fun.

Fast forward two decades to this show, and you see the Rover chair again – except this time it’s made of flawless chrome. The sheer shininess of it epitomises everything that went wrong with design in the noughties. Galleries were falling over themselves to produce ultra-expensive limited editions for a growing collectors’ market buoyed by the economic bubble. You want your chair in Carrara marble? You got it. The bling world of design-art was too often about expense for the sake of it. It was an upgrade of materials, but not of imagination.

None of that is Arad’s fault. He had been blurring the distinction between design and art for decades, and we should thank him for it. It’s not boundary-crossing that’s the problem, it’s the fact that the edginess of Arad’s work has been replaced by a flabby, over-polished mannerism. It’s too slick. Take a series of recent rocking chairs called the Voids (an apt name): no doubt they are technically impressive, but whether they’re made of tiger-stripe acrylic or lacquered aluminium, there’s no disguising that the designs are utterly vacuous. His architecture is even worse – this exhibition gives him so much credit for also being an architect that you wonder whether the curators have actually looked at these buildings. They’re heinous: scaled-up, self-indulgent gewgaws.

Arad has been an early adopter of new materials and technologies – he used rapid prototyping (a method of 3D printing using plastic resin) to make a series of fruit bowls, and he incorporated text messaging into a chandelier for Swarovski – but often abandons them before he’s achieved anything of substance. The show is a celebration of his magpie ingenuity, but you won’t find much under the surface. Arad’s work is all technique. It’s pure expression through materials, form and movement. That means you can only judge it using taste. One of his giant rocking chairs (he loves rocking chairs) or overblown bookcases will bring someone a sudden jolt of pure joy, while the person next to them will yawn. He’s the design equivalent of Marmite.

The superbness of it all is part of the problem. It’s so bombastic that it doesn’t leave you any room to be you – Arad is too busy blinding you with who he is. There is no sociological dimension to his work; it’s not about people, it’s about him.

The reason why this show feels out of touch is that we’ve moved on. Sure, Arad helped erode the boundaries of design, but which boundaries are we interested in? If design is going to rediscover its sense of purpose, it has to crossbreed with other disciplines, from biotechnology to healthcare. The most interesting contemporary designers are already crossing those thresholds; Arad, though, feels like he’s been left far behind.

Painting is a term applied to the deliberate application of paint to a surface, whether for decoration and protection of that surface, or in order to create an image upon that surface.
Many attempts have been made since the late 20th Century to define what painting is, partly for the threat posed to painting by photography and film: That is to say that as photography and film so adequately represent images and movement in a way that paint cannot, painters began to reconsider what it is that they could do, that other types of artist can’t do.

What Painting is Not

This has led to a consideration of what painting is not, in order to better understand what it is. It is clear in this sense that painting is not photography, film, sculpture or performance art. It also does not belong to that category of playful conceptual art that can take any banal object and claim that it is art.
From this simple deduction we find that painting is not adept at conveying a realistic image (like the photo), movement (as in film), three-dimensionality (as in sculpture) and real life action (as in theatre and performance). We are left, then with a medium that is unrealistic in its representation, still and flat. These facts account for the development of ‘way out’ painting forms such as Expressionism, Surrealism and Abstraction. In all of these forms the nature of paint is utilised to do what it does best. Paint can be used to express colour, emotion and a distortion of reality, and so that is what it tends to be used for.
Another thing about painting is that it results in the production (like sculpture) of an object that can be owned and collected. This means that even paintings that defy what painting is best at and try and do something else (as with paintings that attempt to look like photos) can be much sought after for the value that people place upon them as art-objects.

Different Types of Paint

Where does this leave the individual painter?
Firstly, it is important to realise that there are different types of paint (all of which are covered in related articles) and that each of these types have differing qualities. The effect that you will get will depend on the type of paint you use, the surface you apply the paint to and the implement that you use to apply the paint (be it brush, palette knife, hands or whatever).
Whichever paint you choose (out of oil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic, and so on) you must realise that painting is a fluid medium, that flows unlike pencil or charcoal, and that this is a major element in how one applies and manipulates paint. This ‘fluidity’ allows for a range of subtle flowing expressions and accounts, in part, for the use of paint in conveying emotions so effectively throughout the history of art and iconography.
Once this has been realised the painter can begin to experiment with the wide range of visions that can be expressed by adjusting tones, colours and brushmarks. The best way to do this is to focus on developing one area of painting at a time. For example, when dealing with colour, experiment purely with squares of colour, to note the impact that one colour has upon another. If experimenting with tone restricts your palette to just black, white, and the shades of grey that can be mixed with them. In doing this you will gradually build an understanding of the elements that make up painting.

I know an art student who came up with a terrific way to turn a sculpture project into the beginning of a lucrative business and gained critical attention in the process.

For a year-end project she had created a series of puppets modeled on 19th Century French freak show performers. The puppets were beautifully constructed of wood, clay, fabric, and fur and were outstandingly accurate. The eight finished puppets were acclaimed by her teachers and peers alike and were chosen for display in a popular local gallery.

Following the show they were simply stored away…until their creator, also an amateur photographer, came up with an idea.

She carefully photographed each puppet on a neutral background many times over until she came up with eight high resolution same-size matching images. She then sent the digital photos to a popular online photos to canvas art gallery that had been highly recommended, Paint Your Life ( www.PrintYourCanvas.com ), and had the photos printed on canvas and framed in two sets of four each.

The results were amazing, and she sold both sets for a good price within a few days of receiving them from Paint Your Life. The images were charming enough for a children’s room and yet edgy enough for any home or office, and the quality was terrific.

So, she ordered some more. Once she saw that she was dealing with experts in the photo to canvas process, she started working with their editors to come up with variations in printing and displaying the eight images: single images in large formats, smaller images combined and framed together, etc.

Then she discovered that the Paint Your Life ( www.PaintYourLife.com ) photos on canvas gallery also had a staff of talented and experienced artists creating oil paintings, watercolors, and acrylic paintings from photos. So she ordered another series of her puppet photos as oil paintings…and immediately sold them too. Then she tried the puppets as watercolors…and they sold just as successfully.

The custom paintings from photos were such a success she’s now considering ordering Paint Your Life’s ( http://www.printyourcanvas.com/ ) photos to canvas produced in the style of Lichtenstein, Graphic,…or even Pop Art.

Rather than use acrylic printsto have photos made in a wall artthat one can be proud of, the use of canvas art is the most popular and revered. As most individuals try to find special gifts, inimitable and largely special for all their beloved people, many will just offer them presents and gifts that they are used to. There are a diverse offering of tokens but the pleasure of valentine turns to be an issue when you cannot provide a gift that is unique and raises joy in a person.

When you go to purchase a gift for a special person, you might work across the shopping complex and at the end of the day lack anything special and personalized you can give to your lover. Perhaps you might consider the irresistibility of canvas art and the provisions it comes with. Finding an alluring print that is well suited on canvas is a perfect present for a love one, since the extraordinary nature of the image does have some lasting feelings and effect. If you want a masterpiece at a cheaper rate, you can have them transformed using the art of canvas while you could also have the photos or even negatives of any size made into very dazzling and transforming pieces of art.

When it comes to canvas art, canvas comes endowed with a natural aspect that aids in the implementation of very high quality types of canvas jobs. The onset of inks that cannot fade and high class, quality fabric such as cotton and the advent of modern digital technology has made it easy to get a waterproof and qualitative product. Most of the canvases are well stretched well across wooden frames and suited superbly ready to adorn walls while creating very nice atmosphere that brings tasteful details to a home while transforming the present décor.

Have you ever thought of having your own digital photo or any other image of yourself and a special message put on the canvas? You might count yourself missing a unique chance like no other. It can be a great present for your boyfriend or girlfriend, canvas art that radiates love and happiness. With sweet lovely pictures, kisses and apt smiles adorned on the picture, you could add some very fine adorable words that will definitely shine in your love life forever, lasting longer enough like the canvas photo itself. Perhaps you have forgotten your old parents and the significance of valentine even for them.

However, you can run through their photo album, have the loveliest of all their black and white wedding photos, and have it transferred into canvas art where it will be harmonized with bright and new hues. No one will be surprised like your own parents while sending a lovely feeling and improving the mood of the day. Such small canvas photo moments transform a person, while lasting not only on the canvas for a long time but in the hearts of those in the image.

When you consider the nature of canvas art and the competitive acrylic prints, there are aspects of their traits that distinguish the nature of their usefulness. On the onset, acrylic prints are largely a contemporary and modern alternative to canvas designs or even a framed printing poster method. The art that is adorned by high quality aspects is well mounted on sheets on acrylic of 5mm while the flame edges are polished creating a finish that is more than stunning and mesmerizing.

It is a novel method of having a picture framed suiting any novel and modern interior design of a home. It wields a big impact on the walls while the acrylic aids in letting the pictures stand out, giving the idea of floating images out of your own walls. The canvas art are not the only designs that can be perfected since the acrylic printsoffer a sleek, minimal and modern look with clean lines and adorable fixings with an obvious visual impact. The acrylics mounted pictures maintain a translucent quality that interacts with aspects of light to give out texture and movement. The technique is largely robust and east to tidy up, thus making it rather perfect for restaurants, bars and hotels as well as most public places more so on indoor walls at home.

The image being worked on is printed rightly on art paper full of quality that produces the kind of prints with a fade resistant quality guaranteed that will definitely last longer than you might live. The images that also use the canvas art are as durable and elegant, where they hardly crack, deteriorate or chip in any distinct way. You can also use aluminum stud fixings, four deep brushes, on every corned while the canvas print is put on a wall to offer a very contemporary finish that suits most modern indoor home walls or business establishments. In addition, a rather impressive novel product suits interior designers who wish to offer their clients a great finish using canvas prints. The framing is of a novel kind and the image is mostly adorned with a great factor of delightful beauty once it is seen hanging from a wall.

To succeed in canvas art creations, the idea is to figure out the kind of art you want as well as how it can compliment the current design of the interior sought by many. Once you have decided to try out canvas art, know you would not have chosen a great method, since it comes endowed with great advantages and offers a finished look distinct and well favored than acrylic prints. As you select the right canvas print to go for, you can choose the ones largely bold and has a prominent aspect found in your home or room. Go for that art that has these aspects and remember you are not after exact colors that match with the current ones in your room. Canvas art is a better bet and good choice.

While all other people are often wasting their time in order to find a suitable gift for their beloved ones, why not do it in a faster and far better way. Contemporary art promises to refresh the older visual fine art offerings by giving a new and modern method.Acrylic prints are the best way to turn your favourite drawings and pictures into canvas prints. Why are they so attractive? The great thing about these prints is that they keep brightness of the original photo as well as adding some interesting features. Whether you want to transfer drawings of your children, photos from vacations or portraits of your beloved ones onto canvases, you can be sure that they be real masterpieces. It is a super and wonderful thing as they will fit any place and house and will be a pleasant decoration to the interior and design of your home.

If it is a special present that you are probably looking for then look no further, as I will now attempt to answer why this is so. First of all, memories fill our life with some special emotional episodes with effect and colour. When you look at canvas photo prints, you can feel the love and warmth that you can experience again and share this love among your family. An interesting point here is that many people like to gather albums, not in electronically version but as real ones. They keep these albums with a lot of care and from time to time reflect on the pictures within. Any picture from your album can be presented for the canvas work. A super canvas helps to move you through the time to yesterday day event, some years ago or even to the episodes of your past. It is such a pleasant feeling to have the same enjoyable memories again and again. It takes it from your album that is seen only occasionally and spreads the joy of the canvas into a position that is often reflected upon.

Another advantage of acrylic canvases as they can last longer than usual photos and even can be more qualitative. For example, if there is any damage on the original photo or it is already faded, then the turned picture on canvas can be processed to a perfect look. Thus the sweetest and magnificent memories are alive and you can enjoy them again and again. Canvas prints combine traditional forms with today`s up-to-date technologies. Thus you can have you print in various interesting colours, shades and special effects, as you so desire.

Also it is a very convenient that one can order a piece of canvas art online using the internet.
Textured Contemporary Art Techniques

Impasto refers to areas of raised paint that serve to give the artwork texture and form. The use of impasto sets even a very realistic depicted scene, apart from a photograph, in its ability to convey texture and express emotion.
Impasto techniques were frowned upon for a great part of paintings history as painting aimed to erase any traces of its own manufacture. Any sign of the brush stroke in painting was seen to be vulgar and uncouth, and was usually attributed to poor painting skills.
Whilst Rembrandt was berated as being blind in the latter part of his life, and Van Gogh was accused of being a madman in the late 19th Century, both partly on account of their use of impasto, impasto has through the ages served as a fundamental element in painting.
Impasto can be used in one of two ways: either as an overall effect (as in the work of 20th-21st Century painters Leon Kossoff and Frank Auerbach) whereby the paint is thickly layered evoking a sculptural element, or as a more subtle effect bought in to contrast with flatter elements of the painting, as with the works of 17th Century painters Velazquez and Rembrandt.
Because raised paint holds the light better than flat paint, areas of Impasto are often used to add small highlights to areas in a painting. This involves a very subtle use of paint, creating a raised area high enough from the surface to catch the light, but not so pronounced as to dominate the entire picture.

How to Use Impasto

The use of Impasto is generally discouraged early on in a painters development as it is felt that a mastering of tone, colour and line are fundamental initially, and any interference from a building of paint may confuse these issues, as well as being costly, and sometimes messy!
However, to tell an artist not to do something is akin to giving them the full go ahead: Inevitably the budding Oil or Acrylic painter will at some point to experiment with raised areas of paint.
It must be noted prior to this that there is one main argument against the use of impasto: As sculpture is more ideally suited to conveying three dimensions than paint is, paint is best left to dealing with two-dimensionality. Put simply, painting at its purest must be flat.
However, one argument against this is that acrylic and oil paint are so ideally suited to impasto techniques (due to their thickness) that this element should be pronounced to differentiate painting from flat mediums such as photography and print.
In any case it should be noted that if your main preoccupation is colour then using very thick paint will do little other than leave a dent in your wallet (using thick paint invariably means using more paint!). Using heavy impasto should be undertaken in the interest in creating a subtle but sharp tonal contrast, or for its own sake, as in the very thick painted works of Kossoff and Auerbach.
OK, so now we have the debates laid out, it is really up to you to experiment as you wish. If you do want to paint a very thick painting, it is worth building it up in layers: This way you are able to experiment with every thickness of paint between the very thin and the very thick, thus coming to an understanding of the effects produced.
